- The way transportation and information and communication technologies are used to connect people to services, information and people in other places (ACHGK066)
- Collect, select, record and organise relevant geographical data and information, using ethical protocols, from a range of appropriate primary and secondary sources (ACHGS064)
- Represent the spatial distribution of geographical phenomena by constructing special purpose maps that conform to cartographic conventions, using spatial technologies as appropriate (ACHGS066)
This activity makes use of the data on global Internet usage that can be found on the world bank website (this information can be found by clicking on the button below) and the world map below.
Steps:
- Students are given 4 classes to group their usage data into: Very high - High - Medium - Low. They should decide on the limits for their data groupings i.e. Very High is 100% - 80% or similar.
- After selecting their grouping students will need to produce a legend on their map showing how the varying shades of the colors relate to the groupings. Take this time to ensure that students complete BOLTSS for their maps.
- Now students should work through the table of countries, shading in each country according to its percentage of Internet usage.
The final map should look something like this (however with the inclusion of all of the BOLTSS elements)
